Signs of Dental Problems
Early detection of dental problems is crucial for successful treatment. If you notice any of the following signs in your pet, it’s essential to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for a dental exam:
- Bad Breath Halitosis, or bad breath, is often a sign of dental problems. While pets naturally have a slight odor, a strong, foul smell could indicate bacteria buildup in the mouth.
- Red or Swollen Gums: Healthy gums should be pink and firm. If your pet’s gums are red, swollen, or bleed easily, it could be a sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease.
- Yellow or Brown Tartar Buildup Tartar can be easily visible on the teeth, appearing as a yellowish or brownish deposit.
- Loose Teeth If your pet’s teeth are loose or falling out, it’s a severe sign of periodontal disease.
- Difficulty Chewing or Eating If your pet seems to have trouble chewing or is losing weight, it could be because of dental pain or discomfort.
- Drooling Excessive drooling can be a sign of oral pain or irritation.
- Facial Swelling Swelling in the face, especially around the jaw or eyes, could indicate an infection or abscess in the mouth.
Don’t hesitate to seek veterinary care if you observe these signs. Early intervention can significantly improve your pet’s dental health and overall well-being.
